What to Pack

Temperatures and climate vary drastically from region to region and even throughout a single day. Basically the traveller should come prepared for hot, cold, wet and dusty conditions. Packing requires some careful thought and consideration.

 

January to March most parts of the country are hot and dry. Light dressing would be appropriate. You can however carry moderate clothing for the cold nights and early morning especially windy morning on game drives

April May Rainy season -June July cold weather carry warm cloth especially for early morning game drive.

Mombasa (Coast region) warm all through the year very light cloths needed

 

Clothing

  • Subdued safari colours such as khaki, green, beige and neutral colours (dark blue and black clothing is not practical during game drives but can be worn at the lodges)
  • Shirts with long sleeves for a chilly evening and even in summer: as protection from the sun & mosquitoes
  • Golf shirt/T shirts
  • Shorts or light skirts
  • (Safari) trousers for evenings and cooler days
  • A fleece or thick sweater is recommended for early morning and evening game drives
  • Lightweight waterproof jacket
  • Swim and beachwear
  • Comfortable walking shoes (running/tennis shoes are fine) & a of pair Sandals or flipflops

 

Medication and Toiletries

  • Sun block with high SPF.  Hat, moisturizer and lip-salve are all essentials.
  • Personal toiletries – all the Lodges/Tented camps have their own range of complimentary shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and body lotion
  • Malaria tablets if applicable – please seek advice from your General Practitioner.
  • Basic medical kit containing plasters, travel sickness tablets, anti-septic cream, anti-histamine cream, pain relieving tablets for headaches, indigestion tablets, eye drops, medication for upset stomachs, rehydrate sachets and after-sun moisturizer. If you have any allergies i.e. insect stings, or an asthma condition, please make sure you bring enough of your required medication with you.
  • Strong insect repellent & a packed of wet wipes very necessary

 

Personal Eyewear

  • A good quality pair of sunglasses (tinted fashion glasses are not good in strong light),
  • If you wear contact lenses, bring enough solution & a pair of glasses in case your eyes get irritated.

 

Photographic and Optics Advice

  • A good camera with zoom function.
  • We recommend you bring plenty of memory cards/film and batteries. A dustproof bag ensures your camera is safe from the dust whilst on safari. 300 mm lenses are adequate for wildlife photography.
  • A pair of binoculars will enhance your game viewing experience.
  • Please don’t forget to ask permission before taking a photograph of any East African resident, i.e. local community Masai community Samburu and any other local
  • Photography is restricted in some places i.e. government buildings. Some points at the airport entry and departure points. Kindly always ask your driver guide if it’s ok to take photo

 

General

  • Small touch {flashlight}
  • Electronics, you may wish to confirm that you have the necessary adaptors.. we use 3-pin square plugs with 240v.
  • Never approach a wild animal, even if they appear harmless, never walk in any game park unless designated areas driver guide will advise when it’s ok to do so
  • Keep yourself “undercover” – do not display jewellery cash and other valuables
  • Do not display your valuables to the world; this will keep you from being the target of theft.
  • Watch your money. Make sure that, when switching currency you do so in a reputable hotel, foreign exchange bureau or bank your driver guide can assist you in case you need help fee free
  • Drinking water – it is safer to drink bottled or mineral water only
  • Wear a money belt that fits under your clothes if you are comfortable with this
  • Make a copy of your passport /visa and keep it in your luggage.
  • Your safest bet is to carry KSH or USD notes printed after year 2016 are not accepted
  • We recommend you share contacts of your family members back at home next of keen
  • Avoid walking at night at all times both in the city and country side
  • When it’s time to its time stick to that at all times Follow the park rule at all times
  • Follow Beach safety and rules at all times
